Touch of Spirit
September 13 - 07
“A friend is one to whom one may pour out all the contents
of one’s heart, chaff and grain together, knowing that the
gentlest of hands will take and sift it, keep
what is worth keeping and with a breath of kindness
blow the rest away.”
Dinah Maria Mulock Craik
Once gained, never lost, a true friend
is for life because they are of our life. We invite them
into our person, we learn to appreciate them, to nurture and
care for them as they do us. They take up residence in our
soul, that temple within us through which our spirit
expresses itself. They become one with the fabric of our
being, leaving behind threads of worth and value we have
chosen to gather into the weavings of our life texture.
This eventually becomes a tapestry of community as friends
build on friends to join in the effort as one.
Friends are of the essence of our
being, a light in dark moments when we cannot see beyond a
fog of fear, a blanket when the fireplace is not enough.
They know that we are well even when we lay prone in the bed
of sickness. With a friend we are never inconsolable. When
we want to forget our worth, they call us to rise into the
mirrors of memories we have made with them to help us see
our smile again. We learn to see into our own eyes because
we learn to see with theirs. Words fail when we want to
express our true feelings for them because the truth of our
friendship lies in the landscape of truth, beauty and love
that spreads before us as we open to each day. And this
truth and beauty has no boundary. Our friendship is what
fills the circle from here to the horizon in our dreams of
joy and completion. Friendship dissolves ghosts of the
night and clouds that rise up if we contemplate a lonely
evening. We know they are true friends when we know without
them our life is incomplete. We always welcome them within
our heart no matter the circumstances of their life or
ours. We live in compassion with them, knowing that what
happens to them, happens to us and what happens to us,
happens to them.
In some ways our friends have been with
us since birth. Because all that is good in us is touched
by them, enlivened by them. Our acceptance of them and
their acceptance of us is the form into which we pour the
matter of our life. Even though the form was always within
us, their sight helps us learn about the exact nature of the
form. Their touch assists us in learning which matter fills
the form best. The structure of our life is more solid,
more comfortable, expresses with more harmony because of
their presence.
One is reminded of the little girl who,
when her father held her hands to swing her in circles,
would cry with delight, “Do it again daddy, do it again.”
He wanted to stop, he was so dizzy; she would not hear of
it, she was so exhilarated. Friends are fun and fulfilling;
they make us dizzy with the delight of life shared. Lets do
it again and again, today every day.
